The Metropolitan: The Making of a Modern Classic Architecture By Philip Johnson and Alan Richie with SLCE

No Place on Earth: American Image Books, 2004. First edition. 4to; 108 pp.; illustrated from photographs. A fine copy in a very good dust jacket with light edge wear. A promotional book for the building at 90th St. and Third Ave. designed by Philip Johnson and built in 2004. What is this book about? Luxury, multibillion dollar, desirable luxuries, residential landmark, revered name, high level real estate, dream, flawless, creation, excellence, bonding, all-star team, modern classic, record price, landmark success, visionaries, luxury development, and American success story are some of the words and ideas just from the front flap of the dust jacket, and it goes straight downhill from there. Filled with meaningless references, pictures of better buildings, product placements, ten pages of plumbing fixtures, lobby art, and the obligatory meaningless photograph of Warhol fill this piece of embryonic compost.
