A collection of 122 designs for houses, villas, cottages, churches, carriage houses, etc., in a wide range of styles by Hobbs's Philadelphia firm. Each design is described and given an estimated price; an introduction provides "practical hints in regard to the cultivation of artistic taste, choice of situation, style, construction, heating, ventilation, etc.to aid its readers in the cultivation of taste and the love of the beautiful." Most of the designs originally appeared in "Godey's Ladies' Book", and the book is dedicated to the Ladies of America.
