New York: William Gowans, 1858, 1858. Fourth edition. 8vo; pp. fifty-nine, twelve (publisher's non-masonic catalogue). Backstrip missing 1 1/2-inch piece at foot; some pp. opened roughly; else a good copy or better in original gilt-stamped brown cloth. The enlarged Fourth edition of a catalogue originally published in 1848. Gowans was a Scottish-born bibliophile and publisher who came here when he was twenty-five, boarded with the family of E. A. Poe, became a bookseller, collector and publisher. After his death in 1870 his executors sold at auction some 250,000 bound volumes, after eight tons of pamphlets had been sold as waste paper.
