New York the Wonder City: An Illustrated Story of New York with Statistics and General Data Concerning New York's Vastness, New York's People New York's Activities and New York's Intimate Inside Life in the Year 1932

New York: Wonder City Publishing Company, 1931. Item #014532

A strange little example of published boosterism, exemplified by the subtitle. Not quite a guide book, yet filled with information about prominent New Yorkers, alive and dead, hotels, schools, parks, etc. The second half of the book is virtually a real estate directory with pictures of office buildings, information about architect and builder, height, rental area, etc. First edition. 8vo; 288 pp.; illustrated from photographs. Owner's name; stain to front endpaper and to title page; else a good copy in original green boards, in a dust jacket with edgewear to front panel and a chip to head of spine, showing an aerial view of Manhattan at night by Arthur Sasse, taken from a corner of the unfinished Empire State Building specifically for the jacket of this book. Abbot's iconic photograph, from the same perspective, was made two years later.
