The New Metropolis

New York: D. Appleton and Company,1899. This massively compendious illustrated history and description of the metropolis was produced in celebration of the absorption of the City of Brooklyn into the expanded City of New York to form the five boroughs of the city that we now know. Not so much a guide as a narrative account of how the city operates, where the rich and the poor live, how the charities work, and more. At the back of the book is a long section describing (and illustrating) the streets of Manhattan, followed by a 15-page detailed street map of Manhattan, each page ringed with thumbnail photos of distinctive buildings on that section of the map. First edition. 10x 13 "; 650+ pp. with approx. 1000 illustrations. Half-title loose; else a good copy or better in re-backed original gilt-stamped cloth boards with applied spine labels.
