What Shall I Buy for a Present: A Manual

Hartford: T. Steel & Son, 1877. First Edition. First edition. 8vo; 62 pp.; illustrated. Insect wear to covers; owner's penciled name; else a very good copy in original gilt-stamped green cloth. "We have had the following catalogue of our goods printed, in order to answer in some degree the question constantly asked of us, 'What shall I buy for a present,' for Christmas, for a birthday, for a wedding, or for any other desired occasion?" An early consumer handbook published to help one spend one's money at Steele's. Nice engravings of the store's interior and exterior, and of products including silver spoons and forks, silver vases and trophies, and music boxes. An interesting feature of the catalog is the listing of merchandise by price, from fifty cents and up. With essays on diamonds, rings, watches, pink coral, cameos, art pottery, art bronzes, and, bizarrely, Steele's personal efforts in game preservation. Item #010872
