A poem in five parts; it won the Heinemann Prize. It can be read "not so much as a gardening treatise in verse as a long meditation exploring the poet's personal metaphysic in time of war, a poem of menopause", as it is by the poet's biographer Victoria Glendenning or it can be read as a gardening treatise in verse.
